Summer time is synonymous with words like break, vacation, and getaway. This is the time of year when things slow down and the days have a little more sunlight for playing outdoors and relaxing by the grill. But, there is no rest for your water heater. In fact, without your water heater working around the clock, many of your summer time activities would not be possible.
These next few months are a great time to have your water heater inspected to make sure that it is in top working order before the harshness of winter sets in. During the winter months your hot water heater must work a little harder because the outside air is cold and works against the heating element. This makes it especially important that, going into the winter months, your hot water heater is prepared.
Here are some considerations during a routine water heater maintenance appointment:
- A standard tank water heater is built to last at least ten years. But, if when you turn on the hot water faucet you notice that the water is a little discolored, this could be a sign that the tank is beginning to rust and corrode. Any corrosion damage to the seal of your water heater will lead to the tank bursting and flooding water everywhere.
- The heating element for your water heater should be checked regularly to make sure that it is working properly. This is especially true because some water heaters have electrical heating elements, which are in close proximity to water.
- Temperature and pressure valves. These valves play an important role in the overall safety and efficiency of your water heater and should be checked for damage.
- Drain the tank. Over time and with use the water that is stored in your water heater will leave behind mineral deposits that form into sediment. This layer settles on the bottom of the tank and acts as a barrier between the heating element and the water in the tank. Annually draining the tank of your water heater removes this sediment and ensures efficiency.
Luckily, there is plenty of time this summer for rest, relaxation, and water heater maintenance. Call to schedule your annual inspection appointment and avoid any water heater problems in the winter.
